What Is Neuro-Affirming Counselling - and why does it matter?

Neuro-affirming counselling recognises that people experience and interact with the world in different ways. Instead of viewing neurodivergence such as ADHD and Autism as deficits that need to be fixed or changed, neuro-affirming counselling accepts and validates these differences as a natural part of human diversity.
This approach focuses on acceptance and validation of the different ways in which our brains process information or how we may communicate with others. It focuses on adapting the therapeutic environment to meet individual needs and highlights a person's strengths rather than expecting someone to change themselves to fit in with societal expectations and ways of being.
What Does This Look Like In Sessions?
So, what does this actually look like in practice? It is not an approach that is one size fits all, as each person will be unique with their own challenges, strengths and preferences. I will be flexible and respectful and put your needs first in our sessions.
When I’m working with you, I may explore the following adaptations for our sessions;
Encourage movement breaks: In our sessions you are welcome to move around, get up, stretch, or use a fidget toy. I understand that this can help with emotional regulation and focus and this is welcome in a counselling session with me.
Adjusting the sensory environment: I will ask clients if they would like the lighting dimmed, would they like to hold a soft cushion to help with self regulation and self soothing. I will check in that the noise levels feel OK - I know how annoying a ticking clock can be!
Freedom to stim: Stimming is welcomed, as it is a natural form of self-regulation and expression.
No Pressure for Eye Contact: I will have a conversation with clients around their feelings on eye contact. In sessions with me you are not expected to give me eye contact if this makes you feel uncomfortable.
Reminders: I can send reminder emails for upcoming sessions if this is helpful.
Flexible Communication: I have a number of ways in which you can access counselling sessions. In-person, online or telephone sessions. Sometimes you may feel more comfortable speaking on the phone, or you may feel safer with an in-person session. I can be contacted via email, telephone or text whatever feels more comfortable for you.
Exploring your strengths: In our sessions we can explore your strengths as well as your challenges as although there may be things that you find difficult there are qualities, abilities and ways of thinking that are special to you.
Why It Matters
Neuro-affirming counselling is important because as a neurodivergent person you may have experienced feeling different, or like the world wasn’t built with your needs in mind. Having a space where you feel accepted and can be your authentic self can be empowering.
Having a space where you are accepted just as you are - not where you are expected to be, can be transformative in working towards self-understanding, better emotional wellbeing and ultimately self acceptance.
